If you want to plan a unique activity for your math classroom, here’s a fun idea for a math scavenger hunt for middle school students.
Here’s how to plan it:
Resources
- Post-it notes
- Sheets of paper
- Pens
Preparation
Create two sums or equations that equal the same number and write them down on separate post-it notes (see below for examples).
Do this several times for different numbers and stick the post-it notes randomly on the walls around the school classroom.
During The Lesson
Have the middle school students go around the room with a sheet of paper and write down the different equations that you’ve created.
Once they’ve written them all down, have them go back to their desk and work out the answers to all of the sums. They then need to pair up the sums / equations based on them equaling the same number.
Examples
Here are some examples of sum and equation pairings you can use for this math scavenger hunt:
1. Answer = 12
Square root of 144
3 + 4 + 5
2. Answer = 343
7 cubed
1,715 ÷ 5
3. Answer = 2.5
15 ÷ 6
0.5 x 5
4. Answer = 40
7 x 4 x 2 – 16
(123 – 17 – 26) ÷ 2
5. Answer = 1,035
Number of minutes in 17 & 1/4 hours
69 x 3 x 5
6. Answer = 168
Number of inches in 14 feet
(47 + 6) x 4 – 44
