If you’re wanting to plan some activities for Independence Day this summer, here’s a fun 4th Of July scavenger hunt idea that requires the players to use their creativity.

This idea can be used for kids, teenagers, youth groups and adults, or a mixture of these! It’s also a great scavenger hunt to organize as there’s no preparation involved.

Resources

None

Preparation

None

Instructions

Explain to the players that they’re going to be playing a DIY scavenger hunt – Decide Items Yourself.

This means that you won’t be giving them a list of specific items to find; instead, they have to decide what items to collect. There are three rules though:

  1. They have to find 12 items
  2. The first letter of each item has to spell out ‘Fourth Of July’
  3. As best as they can, the items they collect should have something to do with 4th Of July

Example

For example, the 12 items they decide to collect might be:

  • Flag
  • Orange
  • Umbrella
  • Rice
  • Tea
  • Hot Dog
  • Onion
  • Flower
  • Jalapeno
  • Uniform
  • Leaf
  • Yo-yo

Points

There are three ways players can score points:

  1. Award one point for each item that they collect, so up to 12 points
  2. Award one bonus point for the team that collects all 12 items first
  3. Award one bonus point for each item they collect that has something to do with 4th Of July

It’s up to you how you decide if an item has something to do with the holiday. Using the 12 example items listed above, they’d earn bonus points for ‘Flag’ and ‘Hot Dog’.

You might also decide that ‘Onion’ and ‘Jalapeno’ are allowed as they might get added to a hot dog. If the ‘Uniform’ is a military one, that could earn a bonus point, as might an ‘Umbrella’ if it’s a cocktail umbrella. ’Tea’ might also be accepted if the players argued of its role in Boston prior to the American Revolution.

Winner

The winning player / team is therefore the one that scores the most points once all the bonus points have been taken into account.

Ikea Scavenger Hunt Ideas – All The Small Things

Ikea scavenger hunt ideas

Get this Ikea kids cutlery set from Amazon

One of the best things about Ikea is that they have so many small items for sale that don’t cost much.

You can take advantage of this the next time you visit by planning a fun Ikea scavenger hunt based on these small items.

Here are some ideas for how you can organize it:

Resources

  • Scavenger hunt list (see below for item ideas)
  • Pen
  • $25 per person / team

Preparation

None

Teams

This could be played individually or in small teams.

Ages

This Ikea scavenger hunt can be played with people of any age. It’s great for younger kids and teenagers to help keep them entertained while you look for furniture for the home, or with a youth group for an afternoon’s activity.

It’s also a fun game to play with friends if you’re shopping at Ikea with other adults.

Instructions

Give the players / teams each of the resources listed above. Explain that their task is to find each of the items on the list.

The additional part of the challenge is that they have to buy all these items and stay within a $25 limit. This therefore means they only have approximately $2 to spend per item.

Winner

The winning player / team will be the one that manages to buy all of the items on the list and stay within their budget.

If more than one team manages to do this, the winner will be the team that spent the least amount of money overall – they therefore need to make sure they keep a copy of their receipt as proof.

No Money Version

If you don’t have $25 for each team to spend on random items, you can play it with a zero budget by making it a photo scavenger hunt.

To play this version, make sure every player / team has a camera – the one on their cellphone is fine to use. Give them the list of items to hunt for and when they find each one, take a photo of them along with the price tag.

This means that the prices can be totaled up at the end to see who managed to find the items for the lowest cost.

List

Here’s a list of possible items you could have players find – all of them should be available at Ikea for between $1 – $3.

  • Picture
  • Something made of glass
  • Kitchen utensil
  • Food item
  • Mug
  • Child’s toy
  • Picture frame
  • Cushion
  • Storage box
  • Clothes hanger
  • Mirror
  • Silverware tray

  • With other families – If you’re visiting London with friends who also have kids, you could make it a friendly competition between families to see who can see all the items first.
  • With adult friends – Compete against them to see who can complete the scavenger hunt list first.

London Scavenger Hunt Ideas

Office Scavenger Hunt Ideas – Post-It And Spell-It

Office Scavenger Hunt Ideas

Get these multi-colored post-it notes for this game from Amazon

If you want to plan a good team building activity for your workplace, here’s an office scavenger hunt idea that uses post-it notes.

Here are some ideas of how it can be played:

Resources

Preparation

First of all, you’ll need to decide on a word or phrase. This could be something completely random or something more company-specific like your vision or mission statement.

Once you’ve decided on the word or phrase, write out each of its letters on separate post-it notes that are all the same color.

Once you’ve done one set of these, do another set using a different color of post-its. Continue creating sets using a different color for each set until you have as many colors as you will teams.

Next, stick the post-its all over the office – anywhere and everywhere. Make sure that each team has a couple of their post-its placed in harder to find locations, like on the underside of chairs and desks or on light fixtures (bearing in mind safety in the workplace!)

Finally, print off some sheets that indicate – hangman-style – how many words there are in the phrase and how many letters are in each word.

For example, the first part of Starbucks’ mission statement is ‘to inspire and nurture the human spirit‘. This would therefore be set out as follows:

_ _    _ _ _ _ _ _ _    _ _ _    _ _ _ _ _ _ _    _ _ _    _ _ _ _ _    _ _ _ _ _ _

Rules

Split the office into teams – one team for each color of post-its that you’ve prepared. Explain that you’ve organized an office scavenger hunt and that they have to search the workplace for all of their team’s post-its.

Advise them how many notes they should be looking for in total and also let each team know which color is theirs.

Tell them that once they’ve found all their letters, they need to collect a sheet of paper and a pen from you. Don’t give them the sheet in advance, as they might be able to work out what the word or phrase is while they’re still searching for the letters.

When they reach the point in the scavenger hunt where they collect the sheet from you, explain that they need to rearrange all the post-its to make a phrase.

Winner

The team that works out the phrase first.
