This indoor scavenger hunt for kids is one that your children will find fun and quirky, as it’s a bit different to regular hunts. It’s perfect for a rainy day when they’re stuck indoors and are bored of their regular games.
The best part about it is that you can do it again and again, as you can easily change it up every time you organize it.
Idea
This scavenger hunt idea involves moving objects to different rooms so that they are out of place. Your kids then have to hunt all over the house, trying to work out which objects have been moved and returning them to the correct location.
So long as your kids know where items are normally kept, you could choose pretty much anything in the house to move.
Easy Examples
If you have younger kids, you’ll want to move indoor items that are a little more obvious. For example, you could move a:
- Bedside lamp to the kitchen
- Shoe rack from the front door to the back door
- Fruit bowl from the kitchen table and put on a pillow
- Dining room chair and put it in front of the TV
- Pet’s cage and put it in the bath
Harder Examples
For older kids, make the indoor scavenger hunt a little trickier by moving objects that might not be immediately apparent. This can work especially well when swapping items, as there’s no gap where an item would have been moved from, nor will there be an item in a location that there’s not usually one.
For example, you could:
- Move a dictionary from the bookshelf and place it on top of the microwave
- Swap a shelf of DVDs and place it on a bookshelf, then move the books from that shelf to where the DVDs were
- Swap the TV remote from the living room with the kitchen’s TV remote
- Move picture frames around
- Move your bed pillow to their bed and put theirs in your room
Funny Examples
If you simply want to make your kids laugh, do this option while they’re out playing with friends. Move items that will be noticed as soon as they walk into each room.
For example, you could:
- Move a bed into the kitchen
- Place every shoe that’s in the house on to the stairs
- Put all the dirty dishes into the bath, complete with soapy water
- Turn the dining room table upside down
- Rearrange the living room furniture so that the sofas face the walls
Making A Point Example
If your kids have a tendency of leaving their items all over the house, you could organize a fake indoor scavenger hunt to make a point.
Tell them that there are various items that aren’t where they should be and send them off to hunt for them – don’t move anything yourself though!
One of two things will happen:
- They’ll tidy the house without even realizing it, or
- They’ll be confused and spend ages looking all over the house, but be unable to work out what’s been moved
If they tidy the house – perfect! If they get confused, after a while explain what’s out of place:
- These socks in the living room should be in the laundry bin
- Your candy wrappers should be in the trash can
- Your school bag should be in your bedroom rather than in your hallway
This option will probably only work once though, so use it wisely!
As you can see, this indoor scavenger hunt for kids has many possibilities, only restricted by your imagination (and what you can physically move!)
